Ontario Basketball partners with Breaking Barriers through Brave Conversations

As part of Ontario Basketball’s commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) we are proud to partner with an amazing initiative from EDIcation Consulting: Breaking Barriers through Brave Conversations.

This five-part series of honest and raw conversations about equity and diversity in basketball will help make our culture and community more inclusive.

“One of Ontario Basketball’s immediate goals is to significantly reduce the barriers that exist in our sport culture and prevent discrimination of any kind,” said Claude Nebhard, executive director. “Working with EDIcation and having these conversations will help raise awareness in our community about inequities that exist and how we can work together to build a more inclusive culture through basketball.”

The first session’s topic is “Being Muslim in the World of Basketball in Canada.”

Hosted by EDIcation founder and director Dr. Ardavan Eizadirad, the session will also feature Aycha Hamaoui, Saif Rehman, Farhan Baig, Usman Chaudhry, and Amreen Kadwa. Bios for all speakers available on the event registration page.

Sessions are 90 minutes: first 20 minutes is dedicated to discussing education related to equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) concepts in sports followed with a 70 minute discussion where we hear lived experiences from a panel of guest speakers involved in basketball within various roles including players, coaches, and officials.

Register for “Being Muslim in the World of Basketball in Canada,” scheduled for Tuesday April 6, 2021 from 6:30 to 8:00pm (EST).
