Canada Basketball

As the national association and governing body for the sport of amateur basketball in Canada, Canada Basketball aspires to lead the growth and development of the game at home and pursue medal performances on the international stage. Canada is recognized as a world leader in all aspects of basketball, striving to consistently reach the podium in FIBA competitions and the Olympic Games.

 

Primary Purpose

The Women’s Junior Academy Assistant Coaches will work with Canada Basketball Women’s High Performance (WHP) staff in delivering the women’s Junior Academy curriculum to the forty (40) female elite players (aged 13 and 14 years old) chosen for the program.

 

The program will consist of a one-day open tryout on Saturday, September 10th, 2022, followed by five (5) Saturday/Sunday weekend sessions throughout the 2022/23 season:

  1. November 5-6, 2022
  2. December 3-4, 2022
  3. Jan 14-15, 2023
  4. March 4-5, 2023
  5. April 15-16, 2023

Sessions will be held in the GTA at locations to be determined.

Coaches must be available for the above dates

 

Qualifications

Education

  • Has started NCCP coach education or willingness to start and complete the required training.
  • Complete Coaching Association of Canada’s Safe Sport Training Module https://safesport.coach.ca/ (required for selected coaches)
  • Complete a Police check (required for selected coaches)

 

Experience

  • Possess a knowledge of the technical and tactical aspects of basketball required for U14 aged female players.
  • Has experience coaching or playing basketball.
  • Demonstrates the ability to identify, implement, monitor and grow the podium behaviors required by U14 aged female athletes, both on and off the court.
  • Possess knowledge of the Long-Term Athlete Development model (LTAD) and understands the best practices for athlete development at the specific stage and age of the U14 female players.
  • Experience using different methods of positive communication to adapt and respond to changing environments.
  • Awareness of BAHD (bulling, abuse, harassment, and discrimination) coaching behaviors and has eliminated these practices.
  • Has the ability to work as a member of a team of dedicated professionals in the pursuit of common goals.
  • Has a demonstrated passion for basketball and working with developing players.

 

Responsibilities

Athletes, Integrated Support Team, and Staff

  • Foster a high-performance culture in all facets of the team environment. Be a transformational coach in the lives of the players.
  • Work with Canada Basketball WHP staff in running effective practices and off court sessions.
  • Develop athletes in line with the Canada Basketball style of play.
  • Contribute to the development of Individual Performance Plans (IPP) for athletes, in collaboration with the Canada Basketball staff and Integrated Support Team (IST).
  • Evaluate the progress of athletes throughout the Junior Academy season and track and monitor prospective Junior Academy athletes in their respective daily training environments, both remotely and in-person, where possible.
  • Ensure compliance with the Canada Basketball Code of Conduct and be in good standing with your current basketball association and Basketball Ontario.

 

Canada Basketball Management and Office

  • Participate in post-session debriefs to assess and evaluate athlete and the program.
  • Assist in the development of a positive image for basketball in Canada by maintaining professional conduct and appearance on and off the court.
  • Communicate in a timely manner with the Canada Basketball Office in all matters related to involvement of the Junior Academy.
  • Be available for meetings as necessary and as requested by Canada Basketball.
