Volunteer Opportunity: Ontario Basketball Club Excellence Committee

At Ontario Basketball’s (OBA) 2017 Annual Meeting of Members in November, Mike Barbin, Director of Clubs and Competitions, presented an overview of OBA’s plan to develop and implement a club excellence and accountability program.

Part of the plan involves creating a committee to guide the development and implementation of the program, as described in the call for applications below.

Call for Applications: Ontario Basketball Club Excellence Committee

Purpose
The purpose of the Ontario Basketball Club Excellence Committee is to lead in the development of a comprehensive program for member club standards. The Committee will work collaboratively to provide recommendations to the OBA Board of Directors based on research and sharing of best practices from other sport governing bodies and current basketball stakeholders.

Definition of Club Excellence
Club Excellence will act as a framework of best practices and organizational standards for all OBA member clubs.

Membership of the Committee
The Committee will be composed of nine (9) persons including: Two (2) OBA staff members (Executive Director and Director of Clubs and Competitions) and seven (7) additional members or stakeholders from the basketball community approved by the Executive Director.

Responsibilities of the OBA Club Excellence Committee
1. Attend all meetings and conference calls and provide meaningful contributions to advance the Committee.
2. Commit to provide leadership based on the overall improvement of Ontario Basketball without personal bias.
3. Research best practices of club excellence initiatives in like-minded associations.
4. Assist in the creation of a thorough recommendation presented to the Board of Directors and ultimately the membership at the OBA Annual Meeting of the Members in 2018.

Reporting and Outcome
The Club Excellence Committee will put forth a series of recommendations to the Board of Directors in an effort to conceptualize and build a framework for the Club Excellence program and then create a strategy for implementation. The recommendations and reports to the Board of Directors will be facilitated by the Executive Director and Committee Chair.

Meetings and Communication
The Committee Chair will be selected at the first meeting. The Committee will meet by telephone, video conference or in person as required and the timeline will be established at the first meeting.

Timeframe
Understanding the considerable effort that will go into this initiative, the work will be divided into phases in order to establish an attainable timeline for research, design, communication, implementation and execution.

Expenses
While there are no anticipated expenses for any members of this Committee, Ontario Basketball will cover any costs associated with the successful delivery of this initiative, such as mileage.

Application Deadline
Individuals interested in joining the OBA Club Excellence Committee should summit their intentions to Mike Barbin, Ontario Basketball’s Director of Clubs and Competitions, at mbarbin@basketball.on.ca no later than Wednesday, January 10, 2018 at noon.
