U12 Boys Roll into Georgian College for OSDP

As they rolled in with their luggage and basketballs in hand, the U12 Boys of the 2018 Ontario Summer Development Program (OSDP) at Georgian College in Barrie were getting set for the next four days of camp from July 18–21.

Before the athletes hit the courts, they had the opportunity to meet players from other regions as they participated in team building activities. The group cheers were a hit as some athletes pulled out some rhythm and rhymes for passionate basketball cheers.

Day 1 on July 18 was the perfect start to the young athletes’ basketball development. OSDP coaches ran through four stations around the gym to help participants hone their dribbling, passing, shooting, and defensive skills. The day’s points of emphasis at each station included dribbling with eyes up and changing speed, the relationship between the passer and receiver, the three phases of shooting, and positioning for on-ball defense. The players ran through drills and exercises that helped them develop their skills in each of the four areas.

Guest speaker and Ontario Basketball high performance coach, Fred Grannum, came in to talk about the attributes that make a great player both on and off the court. Athletes had the opportunity to share ideas and listen to what Coach Grannum had to say about leadership, discipline, and attitude.

Fitness was also a highlight of Day 1. The U12 boys went through several fitness exercises run by VEJ Athletics trainer, Jordan Guilford, to get their heart rates rising and their bodies in moving. Running ladders, sprints, doing push-ups, and using resistance bands were all part of their fitness education.

Before they knew it, it was time to hit the showers and the hay to get ready for Day 2 of OSDP.
