Recap: 2020 OBA Annual Meeting of Members

The 2020 Ontario Basketball (OBA) Board of Directors election was conducted through a new virtual format due to COVID-19 and welcomed new Board members as well as the return of familiar faces.

Incumbent candidates John Rocchi and Mike Quigley were re-elected, and new Board members Tom Oliveri and Heather LaFontaine were elected at the 2020 Annual Meeting of Members (AMM) on Saturday, November 7 through an online process utilizing GoToMeeting and in partnership with DataOnTheSpot.

They join Claude Nembhard (Director) and Barbara Capes (Director) alongside John Lovett (Regent) and Ontario Association of Basketball Officials’ representative Rick Parnham to form Ontario Basketball’s Board of Directors.

The COVID-19 pandemic has forced many changes in all aspects of society and while OBA teams remain in Phase 3 with non-contact team practices, the AMM meeting format was updated to facilitate physical distancing.

The officers for 2020-21 are John Rocchi as President, Mike Quigley as Vice-President, and David Coulthard as Treasurer.

A question-and-answer period was facilitated through the chat function of the virtual meeting that covered topics including the potential return of OBL play, what Phase 4 competition might look like if we cannot resume full Phase 5 competition, the ongoing efforts of the Gyms for Kids Committee, and advocating with school boards on facility use.

More information about the AMM is available in the draft version of the 2020 AMM Minutes.

The OBA would like to thank outgoing President Stephanie Rudnick for her six years of service to the Board, and Erica Gavel on her four years with the Board. In addition, OBA would like to recognize Lindsay Walsh, former Senior Director of Basketball Development, for more than a decade of dedication to OBA’s mission, vision and values.

Ontario Basketball also encourages members to review the 2019-20 OBA Annual Report, which outlines the organization’s activities for the past year and includes the 2019-20 Audited Financial Statements.
