Play Old Tyme Basketball in Kleinburg

Come out out to the Kleinburg Binder Twine Festival on Saturday, September 15th and try your hand at Old Tyme Basketball, played with the original rules designed by Ontario’s very own James Naismith in 1891.

For over twenty years, Old Tyme Basketball has been organized as part of Old Tyme Activities area of the festival with over 300 participants every year. It begins with a brief history of the invention of the game, then children of all ages play the game based on the original 13 rules of basketball written by Dr. James Naismith.  The game is played on a court lined with hay bales, including peach basket goals and a handmade leather ball.

  • It is a pass or shoot game, once you have the ball, you pass to a player or shoot
  • No dribbling
  • Baskets are made from peach baskets
  • A broom handle is needed to get the basketball out of the basket
  • No out of bounds

The Kleinburg Binder Twine Festival is a celebration of pioneer life in rural Ontario and is one of Ontario’s largest outdoor community festivals.  Rich in tradition, the festival is filled with good old-fashioned food, musical entertainment and Old Tyme Activities for the whole family.  Each year, the festival areas between 25,000 and 30,000 people during its single day of operation.
