Ontario Basketball Postpones Return to Competition until April 2021

Since Ontario Basketball (OBA) announced the proposed schedule for the OBL season this summer we have learned much about the continued spread of the coronavirus. COVID-19 cases have reached record levels in Ontario and the Ontario Government has once again tightened restrictions.

OBA has always anticipated a phased approach to Return to Play involving five phases (click here for OBA Return to Play Plan). Phase 5 would be the full resumption of province-wide competition involving OBL and OBA Championships. It appears, at this time, unrealistic to expect to play a modified Phase 5 OBL competition schedule in the 2020-21 season. We are preparing for a modified Phase 4 resumption of competition during the 2020-21 season that will involve regional games and tournaments beginning April 1, 2021.

Ontario Basketball remains optimistic that we will be able to field competition this season and do not want this postponement to be a barrier to continued development. We encourage all players and coaches, while observing all government and regional health guidelines, to continue to participate in non-contact team practice. OBA will also continue to source and advocate for access to gym facilities.

We want to thank our OBA member clubs, teams, coaches, players, parents, and volunteers as well as the basketball community across Ontario for their continued support and for your attention to all OBA Return to Play guidelines to keep each other safe.
