Ontario Basketball Championships: Host Bid Package 2019-20

Ontario Basketball is seeking hosts for the 2019 & 2020 Ontario Basketball Championship tournaments. This is an opportunity for interested member clubs or municipalities to involve their community in one of the largest basketball events in North America.

In addition, the 2019 and 2020 Ontario Basketball Championships will mark the debut of a new format where each age group will feature two events – one Provincial Championship for teams that previously would have been Division 1, and Ontario Cup. The teams competing in traditional Ontario Cup format will also see a slight change, with Girls’ and Boys’ championships for each age group happening on the same weekend.

The two formats will have separate locations, hosts, and branding with the intent of maintaining integrity of high-level basketball in the province and creating amazing experiences for our teams. This change is based on feedback from hosts and participants at past Ontario Cup events and helps ensure the long-term stability and growth of basketball in the province.

Considering hosting? Consider this:

  • The 2017 Ontario championship tournaments showcased about 1,220 teams.
  • More than 18,500 athletes and coaches participated.
  • More than 500 basketball officials and site volunteers are involved each weekend.
  • Tournaments take place over eight weekends from March through May.
  • Participants and families visit the host city for a minimum two days each weekend.
  • A study suggested the economic impact is more than $23 million.

Ontario Basketball will select hosts based on the quality of responses to the bid package so please make sure all information and budgets are as detailed and accurate as possible. This package includes guidelines that can be used to put together your organization’s application to host one or more of the 2019 & 2020 Ontario Basketball Championship tournaments.  It is important that as much information as possible be provided to enable Ontario Basketball to make a proper analysis of your proposal. A complete application is necessary regardless of if your organization has hosted in the past.
