Volunteer Opportunity: Boys’ Ranking & Seeding Chair for Ontario Basketball
Ontario Basketball is currently seeking a Chair for the Boys’ Ranking and Seeding Committee.
Purpose
The purpose of the Ranking and Seeding Chair is to act as the main lead during the ranking process for the Ontario Cup Provincial Championships. This person will use Ontario Basketball data (scores from Ontario Basketball League (OBL), sanctioned tournaments, and exhibition games) and input from coaches to rank teams as best as possible to create fair and balanced provincial championship draws.
Ontario Basketball will select one (1) Ranking and Seeding Chair to oversee the boys’ programs. The Chair will receive assistance from one (1) Ontario Basketball staff member along with a committee of coaches specifically involved in each championship age category (U10 Novice to U19 Junior).
Responsibilities
In conjunction with the Director of Clubs & Competitions and the Coordinator of Membership Services, the Chair will:
- Review the initial and final rankings provided by Ontario Basketball along with associated game results prior to the final ranking calls for each age category.
- Chair a conference call or in-person meeting with the committee for each age category one (1) week following the third weekend of OBL for each age group and two (2) weeks prior to their Ontario Cup Provincial Championship.
- Review all ranking appeals and provide rationale to members appealing their rankings.
- Review and recommend committee members at each age group.
Meetings and Communication
Meetings will either be in person or over the phone, as follows:
- One (1) weekend following the third weekend of OBL for each age category for initial rankings; and
- Two (2) weeks prior to each age group’s Ontario Cup Provincial Championship weekend for final rankings.
The Chair will be involved with two (2) rankings calls per Sunday for a total of five (5) weeks.
Communications regarding appeals will be completed via e-mail and phone with Ontario Basketball staff as needed. The timeframe for appeals will be restricted to the Monday and Tuesday following the final ranking calls occurring on Sundays.
Expenses and Compensation
While there are no anticipated expenses for any members of the Ranking and Seeding Committee, Ontario Basketball will cover any phone expenses incurred by the Chair related to the committee. Ontario Basketball will also provide the Chair with an honorarium.
Length of Term
The Ranking and Seeding Chair will be appointed for a two-year term that can be renewed upon completion of the term.
