Team Ontario Head Coach Job Description

The Ontario Basketball Association (OBA) is seeking applications interested head coaches for the U15 and U17 Boys and Girls Teams for the 2023-2024 program year.

Qualifications:

  • Cleared Vulnerable Sector Check that has been issued within the last six (6) months. (successful candidates will be required to have a valid vulnerable sector check if it expires during the term of their contract).
  • U17 Age Group
    • At a minimum Train-to-Compete (T2C) National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) certification, or on track to be fully certified by January 1, 2024.
  • U15 Age Group
    • At a minimum Train-to-Compete (T2T) National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) certification, or on track to be fully certified by January 1, 2024.
  • Experience coaching within OBA’s high-performance stream, such as:
    • Centre for Performance,
    • Team Ontario experience,
    • Canada Basketball Junior Academy,
    • Ontario Basketball Association (OSBA),
    • CCAA and/or USPORTs Coaching experience,
  • Possess superior knowledge of the technical and tactical aspects of basketball,
  • Possess superior knowledge of the Canada Basketball International Player Profile,
  • Demonstrated ability to work as a member of a team of dedicated professionals in the pursuit of common goals,
  • Formally outline roles and responsibilities for assistant coaches (and team manager if applicable) and submit a copy to Manager, High Performance once the full coaching staff has been determined. This will act as a guideline to ensure supporting staff are provided with an opportunity for professional development under your guidance.
  • If selected for an interview, head coach candidates will be required to complete a pre-task.
  • All coaches must be available for scheduled tryouts, mini-camps, and training camps, as well as the Canada Basketball Junior Academy and any other High Performance events as requested.
  • Additionally, all coaches must be available for the 2024 Canada Basketball National Championships (early August 2024 – Exact dates and locations to be confirmed)
  • Candidates selected for an interview will be required to complete a pre-task that will be required as part of the interview.

Responsibilities: 

  • Always adhere to all of OBA’s policies and procedures.
  • Assist in the development of a positive image for basketball in Ontario and Canada by always maintaining professional conduct and appearance on and off the court.
  • Act as an ambassador for the province and OBA, always demanding appropriate behavior and appearance from members of the team.
  • Be available for meetings as necessary and as requested by OBA, at a minimum communicate on a weekly and/or bi-weekly basis with the Ontario Basketball office in all matters related to involvement of the Provincial Team.
  • Evaluate and monitor the progress of the athletes leading up to the beginning of the Provincial Team program.
  • Be present and visible at sanctioned member club tournaments, leagues, and Ontario Cups and Provincial Championships in your respective age category as requested.
  • Work in collaboration with the  team coaching staff and other high-performance stakeholders (i.e., AAU Clubs, OSBA programs, etc.) to coordinate the scheduling of all tryouts and training across all of Ontario (ie, Windsor, Ottawa, etc.)
  • Assist Canada Basketball with requests to identify, recruit, and select athletes for participation in the National Team programs.
  • Attend all the Provincial Team related events and functions, included but not limited to  (exact details be communicated):
    • First round try-outs
    • Top 50 selection camps
    • Monthly Mini-Camps
    • Pre-Tournament Training Camp
    • Team Travel Days
    • Technical meeting for Coaches
    • National Championships
    • Be a guest clinician with assistant coaches at one (1) or more of the OSDP Camps.
  • Presentation and execution of fundraising initiatives to provide elite level basketball development training, and competition leading up to National Championships.
  • Plan, prepare and direct training and practice activities of the team.
  • Collaborate with the Coaching Staff to prepare and submit to the Manager, High-Performance a detailed program report, Individual Performance Plans (IPP), and athlete evaluations within the conclusion of the program.
  • Participate in debrief meetings following the completion of the program if requested.
  • Oversee the Assistant Coach to ensure an official roster is submitted prior to Canada Basketball’s submission deadline. The roster template form will include contact information for coaches and athletes (i.e., full name, date of birth, parent name & contact, hometown, high school, high school coach, club coach, height, wingspan, and forearm length, etc.).
  • Oversee the Assistant Coach to ensure athletes’ gear sizing / athlete details for OBA communications team (i.e., social media, e-mail, etc.) are submitted.
  • Be aware of and understand OBA budgeting process and financial policies and procedures.
  • Ensure all program personnel, support staff, and volunteers are aware of the Association’s financial policies and Government audit requirements in connection to funds and their control.
  • Ensure that proper documentation is obtained for any expenditures in the program areas under their jurisdiction.

All coaching certifications will be confirmed using Canada Basketball’s Game Plan and The Locker. If you are in progress for Train to Compete you must be on target to be fully certified by January 1, 2024.
