Open Now: 2020 Ontario Summer Development Program (OSDP) Head Coach Applications

Ontario Basketball (OBA) is seeking 40 coaches in total interested in representing Ontario as the Head Coaches of the 2020 Girls’ and Boys’ Regional Ontario Summer Development Program and Ontario Summer Games.

Note: We are seeking representation from 10 of the 12 regions. If 10 unique regional programs are not found, we will “double up” programs in areas that have more interest. Regional breakdown can be found at the end of this document.

Requirements:
Head Coaches must:

  • Be certified at the stage of athlete they are coaching (e.g. U12 “Learn to Train” and U14 “Train to Train”)
  • Be a member in good standing
  • Have access to a facility or gym to provide 30 hours of training
  • Have a minimum of 15 athletes participating in their regional program
  • Select 10 athletes from their regional program that are able to commit to the Camp

The successful coach must also be:

  • Knowledgeable of and practicing the principles of Canadian Sport for Life and Long Term Athlete Development
  • A strong and open communicator who is organized and with scheduling skills
  • Well connected to the current basketball environment in Ontario
  • Aligned with the goals of Ontario Basketball

Responsibilities:

  • Promoting the regional program in your area to attract participants by using your network

Note: Ontario Basketball will post your regional program information on our website and provide an email blast to all potential participants in the area.

  • Coordinating 30 hours of gym time for regional training within the time frame allotted by Ontario Basketball

Note: Ontario Basketball will cover up to $1,000.00 worth of gym time for the training.

  • Delivering 30 hours of regional training (with the support of an Assistant Coach)
  • Engaging your Assistant Coach and Volunteer Coach during training sessions
  • Communicating with the parents of the athletes in your regional program
  • Attending the program-culminating event (overnight Camp at Georgian or Ontario Summer Games in London)
  • Delivering station work at Camp (all coaches will be assigned a skill to deliver – U12 only)
  • Supervising the athletes during program culminating event (on-court, during in-class sessions and at residence)
  • Submitting all requested information and end of program financial compensation documents to OBA by a specified date

Program Culminating Camps: July 5-8 (Girls) and July 8-11 (Boys), Location - Georgian College, Barrie, ONProgram Culminating Event: July 29 - August 2 (Boys and Girls), Location - University of Western Ontario (Residence) and Fanshawe College (Games), London, ON

Compensation:

  • Measurable experience that can be put towards a coaching resume
  • Financial compensation for travel (mileage one-way to Georgian College or University of Western Ontario)
  • Honorarium of $400 for involvement with program ($200 for training hours; $200 for attendance and involvement at camp)
  • Ontario Basketball gear package (to be distributed at camp only)
  • Food and accommodation at program culminating event (Camp)

Note: The full honorarium will not be given if the coach does not attend camp.
