Ontario Player of the Week Jan 29 – Feb 5

This week’s Ontario Basketball player of the week has been awarded to Naz Long, a 6’4” point guard currently playing for the Salt Lake City Stars in the NBA G-League, averaging 19.6 points along with 6.6 rebounds and 6.6 assists per game during the week.

Long, born in Mississauga, attended Father Michael Goetz high school and then transferred to St. Martin, both in Mississauga. He received multiple scholarship offers from Rice, Dayton, Creighton and Miami before he accepted and fully committed to Iowa State University.

Long played 3 full seasons at Iowa State, starting for the whole year in two of those years. His 2015-16 season was cut short with labral tears suffered in both of his hips. In his redshirt senior season, he received the honor of being named to the All-Big 12 second team, averaging 15 points and 5 rebounds per game in 35 starts.

He entered the NBA Draft in 2017, going undrafted but followed that up by signing a two-way contract with the Utah Jazz, and made his NBA debut on December 26, 2017 against Denver. He was sent back down to Salt Lake City and has thrived there since then as a permanent member of the starting rotation and playing heavy minutes on a nightly basis.

Tune in next week to find out who takes home the Ontario Basketball player of the week!
