Lincoln Prep top TRC for 2018 OSBA Women’s Championship
In a showdown of rivals, top-seeded TRC Wolfpack came in as the favourite having handed #2 Lincoln two of their three losses during the regular season, but it was the Huskies completing the come-from-behind victory to take home the 2018 Championship – their second consecutive title and Finals victory over TRC by a final score of 84-72.
“It’s amazing – all the work we put in throughout the season is paying off and we played a full 40 minutes which is what we wanted to do and the outcome is what we wanted so we’re happy,” said Finals MVP Niyah Becker, a 6’2” senior wing from Winnipeg committed to Utah next season. “We made sure we were running transition a lot and we had a great gameplan going in – we were prepared and knew what we wanted to do and we executed.”
And what a gameplan it was for the Defensive Player of the Year Becker – shut down TRC’s star guard Makayla Ennis the reigning regular season MVP. Becker was all over Ennis forcing the MVP into a 3-16 shooting night and just 7 points.
Becker couldn’t have done it without the efforts of 6’3” Calgary native Brynn Masikewich who dominated inside for the Huskies with 30 points and 22 rebounds. Lincoln Prep needed a strong push after falling behind 38-25 at the midway mark, putting up an astonishing 59 second-half points.
“After halftime we kind of came together and it was go time” said Masikewich. “We just kind of did what we had to do and we got the job done!”
