#GrabAWhistle and give officiating a try this summer

Ontario Basketball (OBA) is calling on high school and post-secondary student-athletes to #GrabAWhistle and give officiating a try this summer!

Ontario Association of Basketball Officials (OABO) is running two introductory officiating development camps for individuals with limited or no officiating experience in July at Georgian College in Barrie.

Read about Nine Reasons to Become a Basketball Official.

Ideal candidates for this camp are:

  • Between the ages of 15 and 25;
  • Currently playing or have played basketball at the high school level, OBA level or higher; and
  • Have no officiating experience.

Other assets include being in good physical condition and having a desire to learn and a keen interest in exploring the possibility of becoming a basketball official. Some knowledge of FIBA rules is helpful but not necessary.

Officials who have just completed their first year of officiating with a local OABO board are also welcome to register for the camp, however, they should be aware that it is a very basic camp that stresses the development of fundamental skills rather than game officiating.

The camp will consist of a series of classroom sessions as well as the opportunity to officiate 3×3, 4×4, and 5×5 games. These games will focus on development, not on winning, which will provide a positive, non-threatening environment for the officiating camp participants to develop their understanding of the rules and the skills required to become an official. Attending this camp will give individuals who want to join a local officiating board in the fall an excellent head start.

This “Introduction to Officiating” course was run with several clubs this past year with very successful results. Some of the 16- and 17-year-old participants have already joined an OABO local board and have started to officiate with them. Having players take this course and gain officiating knowledge and experience might not only lead to a part time job opportunity for them but could also be a valuable resource for a house league program.

Enrolment is limited to 18 officials at each camp to allow for personal attention from the staff, which includes current and former OUA officials as well as OABO Provincial Evaluators.

These camps sell out every year, and there are only a few spots left, so don’t delay. Register now!
