Coach Development Pathway

Ontario Basketball has developed a Coaching Pathway that provides a clear vision for prospective or established leaders looking to coach at any level (from grassroots to high performance) in Ontario. The Coaching Pathway is aligned through the National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) as per the appropriate stages of Long Term Athlete Development (LTAD).

  1. NCCP Community Sport –FUNdamentals(Ages 6–9)

Target Audience:
New and developing coaches, often volunteers, parents, or teachers who are introducing young children to basketball for the first time.

Basketball Programs Associated:
U9 Rep

House League

Jr NBA

Overview:
This phase focuses on creating a positive, engaging, and inclusive introduction to basketball. Coaches emphasize basic movement skills (running, jumping, balance, coordination) alongside simple basketball fundamentals like dribbling and passing. The priority is fun, participation, and building a love for physical activity rather than competition or performance outcomes.

  1. NCCP Instruction – Beginner (Learn to Train, Ages 9–12)

Target Audience:
Coaches working with athletes who are beginning to understand structured practices and basic team concepts.

Basketball Programs Associated:
OBL : U10 – U12 Boys and Girls

Overview:

Practices become more structured, and athletes start to understand simple tactics and teamwork. The focus remains on skill development and confidence-building rather than winning.

OSDP and OSG – U14

Overview:
This phase introduces athletes to more consistent competition while continuing to prioritize development. Coaches focus on refining technical skills, introducing more complex offensive and defensive systems, and improving physical conditioning. Athletes begin to specialize more in basketball and develop a stronger understanding of game strategy and performance habits.

  1. NCCP Competition Development (Train to Compete, Ages 15+)

Target Audience:
Experienced coaches working with high-performance athletes in competitive club, high school, or elite development programs. Coaches and/or athletes in the OSBA, Post Secondary, or National pathway.
