Ontario Player of the Week Feb. 5 – Feb. 11

This week’s Ontario Player of the Week has been awarded to Dallas Mavericks forward and Toronto native Dwight Powell. Powell finished the week with 15.7 points per game to go along with 8.7 rebounds including an 18 point and 12 rebound performance against the Houston Rockets on February 11.

Powell attended IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida during his high school years to hone his talents into being recruited for Division 1 college basketball. He was a 5-star recruit out of high school and accepted a full scholarship to the University of Stanford for the 2010 season.

In his freshman season, he earned a spot on the All-Freshman team in the Pac-10 conference, averaging eight points and five rebounds per game. At the end of his sophomore season, Powell and the Cardinal won the NIT Championship. Powell’s junior season was a great success, as he was named to the first team All-Pac-12 along with being named the Pac-12 Most Improved Player of the Year, averaging 14 points and 8 rebounds, and followed this season up with another naming to the first team All-Pac-12 and was also named the conferences Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

He was selected with the 45th overall pick in the 2014 NBA Draft by the Charlotte Hornets, was then traded to the Cavaliers and played on their Summer League team. Powell was then traded again, this time to the Boston Celtics, where he was also a big part of their G-League team.

Finally, Powell was traded to the Dallas Mavericks along with Rajon Rondo from Boston. Since his trade to Dallas, Powell has turned into a very solid contributor, making his way into the starting lineup in this current NBA season.

Tune in next week to see who takes the Ontario Player of the Week honors, with some possibility for some NBA All-Star weekend performances!
