10 Ontario Players Competing in 2019 Summer Universiade in Napoli

The 30th Summer Universiade kicks off today in Napoli, Italy and runs through July 14.

10 athletes from Ontario will compete in the men’s and women’s international basketball competitions. The Women’s Team Canada will compete in Pool D with China, Finland and Australia, while the Men’s Team Canada will compete in Pool D with Germany, Italy and Norway. The Summer Universiade is put on by the International University Sports Federation (FISU). All Canadian athletes in attendance are current standout U Sports athletes.

Brody Clarke (University of Alberta Golden Bears) was a member of Team Ontario twice, representing the U15 team in 2010 and the U17 team in 2012. Meanwhile, two-time U Sports Men’s Basketball Player of the Year Kadre Gray (Laurentian Voyageurs) was chosen to be the flag bearer for Canada at the Opening Ceremony on July 3.

Jama Bin-Edward (Ryerson Rams) was a member of U17 Team Ontario in 2016 and is an OSBA alumnus who attended TRC Academy, graduating in 2017. Hilary Hanaka (McMaster Marauders) represented Team O three times: U15 in 2010 & 2011, and U17 in 2012. Hanaka and Linnaea Harper helped the Marauders claim their first National Championship in March 2019.
