U14 Girls – Ontario Cup: D1 Preview

With the U14 Girls Provincial Championships set for this weekend, the stakes are a little higher with it being announced that the D1 winners of this age group will represent Ontario at the Jr. NBA World Championship Canada Regional, with the chance to win and represent the country and move on to the inaugural World Championship event from August 7-12 at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex near Orlando, Florida.

Let’s take a look at the 8 teams at the U14 Girls level looking to qualify:

#1 seed Welland NGBA Warriors

  • The Warriors enter Ontario Cup as the number one seed, finishing the season with a 19-2 record after only losing to Caledon in November and Transway in December. Head coach David Picton will look to help guide his girls to the provincial championships with a solid showing this weekend.

#2 seed Transway Basketball

  • Transway comes in after a strong 30-1 season, with their only loss coming to Caledon in February by only 4 points. Head coach Antony Randall leads his strong Transway team into Ontario Cup looking reign supreme in Division 1.

#3 seed Caledon Cougars

  • The #3 seeded Cougars come into Ontario Cup with a 32-6 record after the season with impressive wins over both Transway and Welland, the only two teams seeded higher than them entering the Ontario Cup. Head coach Peter Jhaj is looking to build off of those wins to try and bring his Cougars one step closer to the Jr. NBA World Championships.

#4 seed Ancaster Blitz (D’Angela)

  • Head coach Chris D’Angela brings his number 4 seeded Ancaster Blitz into Ontario Cup with a 13-9 record on the season. With a close loss to #3 seed Caledon to build off of, Ancaster will look to blitz their way to a provincial championship.

#5 seed Motion Basketball (Davis)

  • Motion Girl Power heads into Ontario Cup with a strong 18-6 record, and with competitive losses to Caledon and Welland, head coach Sherri Gosse will look to make those slight adjustments to push her girls to a couple upsets and try to make a run to the championship.

#6 seed Woodbridge Basketball

  • Head coach Franklyn Clarke brings his Woodbridge U14 girls into Ontario Cup after a strong 21-11 record for the season, and with a win over the #3 seed Caledon under their belts from earlier in the season, they will look to shock some people and make a deep run to the championship.

#7 seed Brampton Basketball (Johnson)

  • Head coach Keith Johnson brings his young Brampton Basketball U14 team into provincials with an opportunity to make some noise. With a win over higher seeded Ancaster on top of playing a lot of the higher seeded teams tough, they could prove to be a difficult out.

#8 Brampton Basketball (Zoffranieri)

  • After finishing the season with an even 12-12 record, head coach Carlo Zoffranieri will be looking to make a little bit of noise at Ontario Cup. After good wins against Woodbridge and Ancaster this season, they have proven they can hang with the higher seeds and will look to continue that trend at Ontario Cup.
