Ontario Basketball League All-Star Showcase Recap

On Saturday, June 11, the Ontario Basketball League (OBL) hosted their first annual All-Star Showcase at HoopDome located in North York. The OBL All-Star Game showcased the top players who participated in the first season of the OBL from across the province.

On behalf of Ontario Basketball we would like to thank those who attended the first annual OBL All-Star Games and look forward to another amazing year. The talent that was displayed on the courts was incredible and can only get better. Also big congratulations to all the season-winning coaches, your passion and commitment to the sport was demonstrated by your presence at the OBL All-Star games as well as through your All-Star team.

U10 Boys

Starting off the day the U10 Boys played a competitive match. Coached by Ted Ferreira (U10 Scarborough Basketball – Ferreira), Team Ferreira won 54-48, over Team Urosevic coached by Alex Urosevic (U10 KW Vipers).

At halftime Team Ferreira was up by one, 31-30 when Tanner Delevante (Milton Stags) scored an impressive 8 points in the second half, finishing the game with 14 overall. William Riley (KW Vipers) also proved to be a top scorer for Team Urosevic scoring 9 points in all four quarters.

U10 Girls

The U10 Girls played a competitive game. Coach Rudy Hamm (U10 Wildhawk Basketball) and Jonathan Subido (U10 Caledon Cougars) went head to head with a mixture of the Caledon Cougars and the Wildhawk and Cambridge Basketball OBL teams.

U11/12 Boys

Coach Bob Messam’s (U11 Toronto Triple Threat) U11/12 Boys took home the win, 87-53, against Lloyd Montague (U12 Brampton #1).

From Team Messam, Levon Keeny (Toronto Triple Threat) and Trey Higgins were the top scorers of the game dropping 13 points each. Closely following with 12 points was Dawson Matsell (Blessed Sacrament–Matsell), who scored 10 points in the third quarter consisting of two 3-point shots.

Team Montague put up a fight, top scorers Landon Montague (Brampton #1), with 9 points, and Amare Hamilton, with 8 points, led the team. Hamilton hit two clutch 3 pointers, white Montague was a consecutive scorer in all four quarters.

U11/12 Girls

Nadia Flynn (U11 Transway #1) and her team took home the win 57-44, over Matthew Sepkowski’s (U12 IEM Basketball) team. Justiece Miller, team Flynn, blew the crowd away as she scored 18 points making her the leading scorer.

Second half was Miller’s time to shine as she scored 6 points per quarter. Not far behind on Team Flynn was Tenesha Clark (Transway) with 12 points throughout the game.

Taiji Sta Maria led Team Sepkowski with 11 points and trailing behind was Olivia Hutton (East York Basketball) with 10 points, scoring her first 8 in the first quarter.

U13/14 Boys

The U13/14 Boys played an intense match as Team Parent (U14 Scarborough Blues – Parent), coached by Kevin Parent and his team took home the win 98-77 against Team Ferguson (U13 Scarborough Blues – Ferguson).

In the first half, head coach Nathan Ferguson and his team was behind by seven, 41-48, but Neil Paras showed exceptional athleticism scoring 24 points and ending the game with 34 points.

Kushiah Henry Daniels (Scarborough Blues – Parent) scored a high of 19 points making him lead scorer on Team Parent. Following closely behind Daniels was Julian Rosenhek (North Toronto #1) with 15 points on the board.

U13/14 Girls

Team Wright, coached by Donovan Wright (U14 MUMBA – Wright) and assisted by Roger Antonio and Patrick Brown took home the win 50-35 against Team Juzenas.

Down by a basket at half, 18-21, Team Juzenas, coached by Alana Juzenas (U13 Oakville Vytis #1) and assisted by Julia Mulligan played their hearts out.

Team Juzenas’ Kiana Hall (Vaughn Basketball) lead her team with a high of 7 points, closely behind her was Enaiya Herdsman (Scarborough Blues – Nembhard) with 6 points.

Team Wright had an impressive second half scoring 27 points as a team. Heidi Nelson (Stoney Creek NYB) and Kaya Charles (Transway – White) tie as team high scorers with 10 points each.

U15/16 Boys

The highest scores of the night belong to the U15/16 Boys division. Team Pickens, coached by Jordan Pickens (U15 Etobicoke #1 – Pickens) and assisted by Mark Croft put up a good fight. Team Noel, coached by Brian Noel (U16 Scarborough Blues – Noel) and assisted by Mickael Pryce and John Panagioyopolous, finished the game 133-112.

This incredible game was 3-pointer after 3-pointer. Top scorers of the game were Jalen Menzies and Graeme McDougall (London Ramblers) with 24 points each. Closely behind was Mattew MacNeil (London Ramblers), Travis Chambers (Scarborough Blues – Noel) and Keanu Ebanks with 22 points each. Ebanks shot at an excellent ratio managing to hit at least one 3-pointer a quarter.

Team DiSabatino coached by, Blaize DiSabatino (U15 Transway ) and assisted by Joe Mataseje and PJ DiSabatino, fought hard as they took home the win over Team Raso, coached by John Raso (U16 Niagara Selects) and assisted by Jacob Raso. These girls played a competitive game, showcasing their skill and passion.

U17/19 Men

Team Peng, coached by Steve Peng (U19 KW – Peng) put up a good fight against Team Urosevic coached by Bob Urosevic (U17 KW Vipers – Urosevic) and assisted by Locksley Turner and Dejan Stajic. Team Peng down by 8 at half, 34-42 came out strong during the second half taking home the win 87-79.

Rigel Kaba scored a high of 21 points for Team Peng, with Jake Dekker (KW – Peng) not far behind with a high of 15 ponts.

Matt Foster (Stoney Creek NYB #1) from Team Urosevic shot a high of 13 points, with Dragan Stajic and Nigel McCue (Wildcats Basketball) tied with 11 points each.

U19 Women

Ending the night Gad Perlmutter (U19 York North – Perlmutter) and Chris Rayner (U19 Tecumseh Saints) both had amazing teams. Team Perlmutter, assisted by Claude Nembhard, Ron Reinders and Paul Thorpe, had a great mix of girls from YNBA, North Toronto, Toronto Lords, Toronto Triple Threat and Blessed Sacrament. Team Rayner, assisted by Michael Barbuzzi, also had an elite set of girls from Burlington, Blessed Sacrament, Toronto Triple Threat, Oakville and Tecumseh Saints. Congratulations to both teams.

The purpose of the Ontario Basketball League is to create an inclusive, age- and ability-appropriate, province-wide league structure that provides meaningful competition for athletes of both genders in all age categories (U10 to U19) to promote safe and stage-appropriate athlete development according to Long-Term Athlete Development principles.
