OBA Update on Annual Meeting of Members Motion
To Our OBA Members,
On April 22nd, I wrote to the membership about the questions raised at our Annual Meeting of Members in February and the motions that were passed: coaching certification, shot clock equipment and basis points. Below is an update on each area.
Coaching Certification
Motion 1 called for a public audit of OBA’s coaching certification capacity, learning facilitators by region, scheduled clinics, and the number of coaches requiring certification.
We want to be clear on one point that sometimes gets lost in this conversation: OBA has the capacity to certify coaches. We have sufficient Learning Facilitators and Evaluators. The limiting factor is not facilitator capacity; we have never turned away a club or coach who wanted to get certified. This works when OBA and member clubs move forward together and our commitment to making that happen has not wavered. Running a clinic requires a host club and to coordinate locally, the same way a league game requires a host venue. That is a shared responsibility, and it is one we need to work through together more effectively than we have.
Audit as per Motion 1 is available here.
Shot Clock Equipment
We purchased 6 new shot clocks, repaired 2 existing units and added 2 new remotes, bringing us to 10 shot clocks in active operations.
However, inventory alone does not solve the problem. For example, a shot clock that is not operational on game day, regardless of how many we have in stock, means that game goes without one. Beyond our recent purchases in new equipment, the real focus is execution, working in close partnership with host clubs ahead of every league and sanctioned game to ensure equipment is in place, tested, and ready. That level of coordination is what ultimately drives consistency and we appreciate the commitment our hosts bring to delivering it.
Basis Points
Basis Points will not be part of our ranking system next season. We are working through what replaces it and will share that with the membership before the 2026–2027 season opens. The goal is a system that is simple, transparent, and resistant to the distortions that forfeits and scheduling order create.
We are committed to keeping our membership informed and communicating as openly and as often. If you have questions, do not hesitate to reach out directly.
Yours in Basketball,
