In Memoriam for Bob Maydo
The Ontario Basketball Association extends its deepest condolences to the family, friends, colleagues, and former players of Bob Maydo—a towering figure in Toronto high school basketball whose influence reached far beyond the gym. A recent tribute described Coach Maydo as a legendary coach who “made his mark off the court as well,” a reflection of the character and community impact he carried throughout his life.
Coach Maydo’s legacy includes championship excellence and decades of athlete development. He coached Bathurst Heights Secondary School to OFSAA AAA Boys Basketball titles in 1988 and 2000, achievements that remain part of Ontario’s basketball history. His impact also extended to Emery Collegiate Institute, where athletes he mentored went on to excel at the next level—crediting him not only for high performance standards, but for shaping their approach to leadership and life.
“Coach Maydo was the kind of leader who never had to raise his voice to raise the standard,” said Claude Nembhard, CEO of the Ontario Basketball Association. “He coached with integrity, demanded accountability, and still made every athlete feel seen and valued. His character—how he showed up for young people day after day—is the legacy that will outlive every scoreboard.”
Ontario Basketball joins the broader basketball community in honouring Coach Maydo’s life and contributions. His example will continue to guide coaches, teachers, and mentors across our province: lead with purpose, build people, and leave every place better than you found it.
Rest in peace, Coach Maydo.
