Championship Profile – Niyah Becker

The OSBA Women’s Championship is set to be an epic clash between the defending champions from Lincoln Prep and the top team from the 2018 regular season from TRC Academy. It is a battle of the OSBA titans and we are taking a look at some of the key players from both teams in approach of the championship. First, the defending champions from Lincoln Prep and their star senior guard, Niyah Becker.

Becker, a 6’2” guard, has come a long way from her roots in Winnipeg, Manitoba. She made her way to Hamilton, Ontario to enroll at Lincoln Prep and pursue her dream of playing high-level prep basketball in hopes of continuing on to playing at the next level. In her final season at Lincoln Prep she has really taken the reigns of being the go-to leader of the Huskies in pursuit of their second consecutive championship.

“Niyah brings a quiet leadership which has proven invaluable to us at points in the season, both in games and practices,” said Lincoln head coach Andrew Bailie. “Her leadership is something we have challenged her with, as she is well liked and respected by all her teammates not only for her basketball skills but also her friendly demeanor.”

She has become a catalyst on both sides of the floor for the Huskies over the course of her playing time at Lincoln Prep, and that has risen to a new level with the emergence of teammate Brynn Masikewich, who together have formed one of the most dynamic defensive duos in the OSBA. “Defensively her reach is outstanding to contest shooters and get rebounds, but also has extremely quick hands that has on a number of occasions lead to run out layups,” said Bailie. “Offensively she has a tremendous ability to finish at the rim and shoot the medium range jump shots.”

Her defensive skills have been on showcase all season long, as Becker was recognized as the OSBA Women’s Defensive Player of the Year for 2018, along with being named as an OSBA First Team All-Star, along with her teammate Masikewich.

The Championship will be the final game at Lincoln Prep for Becker, hoping to finish her high school career on top. She has already announced her commitment to the University of Utah for the 2019 season.

You can catch Becker, Masikewich and the rest of their Lincoln Prep teammates trying to defend their OSBA Championship against TRC Academy on March 22 from the Guelph Gryphons Athletic Centre at 8:00 p.m. on OSBA TV.
