Ontario Athletes Headline List of Invitees for Women’s National Team Assessment Camp

Canada Basketball announced the 26 female athletes invited to the Women’s National Team assessment camp this month.

Of the 26 invitees, 13 athletes are from Ontario and one has played in the Ontario Scholastic Basketball Association (OSBA).

The team trains in Edmonton from June 14 to July 3 before playing a three-game exhibition series against Turkey at the Edmonton Grads International Classic from July 4-7.

New York Liberty rookie Kia Nurse (Hamilton) is one of three WNBA players on the roster, joining fellow Ontario athletes Natalie Achonwa and Kayla Alexander, both members of the Indiana Fever.

Meanwhile, the OSBA is represented by former Durham Elite standout Shaina Pellington, who captured Big 12 Freshman of the Year honours this season at the University of Oklahoma.  Prior to her rookie season, Pellington was named as a 2017 OSBA First-Team All-Star and, a year earlier, Tournament MVP for her performance with Team Ontario at the 2016 Canada Basketball National Championships.

Canada is currently ranked fifth in the FIBA Women’s World Rankings.
