Canadian U19 Junior Women Win Bronze at FIBA World Cup 2017

Ontario Athletes Contribute to Historic Bronze Medal Finish at U19 FIBA Women’s World Cup in Italy

The U19 Women’s National Team finished with a bronze medal at the FIBA U19 Women’s World Cup after defeating Japan 67-60 on July 30, in Udine and Cividale del Friuli, Italy. The win is Canada’s highest finish at the U19 Women’s World Cup.

Ontario’s presence was evident throughout the tournament and particularly in the bronze medal game as Laeticia Amihere (Mississauga) led the Canadian team with 13 points and 10 rebounds, while Hailey Brown (Hamilton) added 12 points and five rebounds. Hanna Hall (Hamilton) pitched in 10 points and three rebounds, completing the Ontario trio that led Canada to this historic win.

The game was close from start to finish. Canada led by four after the first quarter, as a result of a buzzer beater by Hall. After winning the second quarter 19-17, Canada went into the half up 33-27. The game continued to go back and forth until the end of the fourth when Canada finally pulled away securing the win and the bronze medal. Canada finished the tournament with a 6-1 record, as their only loss came in the semi-finals against Russia, who went on to beat USA in the finals.

This is the Canadian Women’s National Team program’s first podium finish at an international FIBA event since 2012 when the team earned a bronze at the FIBA U17 Women’s World Championship.

The bronze medal at this year’s U19 Women’s World Cup adds to a successful summer for Canada Basketball, as the men won gold at the U19 Men’s World Cup earlier in July. This summer has been filled with tremendous achievements by the national programs as Canada continues to solidify itself as an international powerhouse in the FIBA youth rankings.
