In Memory of Paul Weekes
Ontario Basketball Members and Friends,
On February 11, 2026, Coach Paul Weekes passed away at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre in Toronto.
Paul grew up in Etobicoke, in the Rexdale community, where his love for basketball first took root. He developed his game at Thistletown Collegiate Institute before continuing his academic and athletic journey at Niagara College and Seneca College.
Coach Paul became a highly respected figure in the Greater Toronto Area basketball community. During his time with the Vaughan Secondary School Senior Boys Basketball Team, he built a culture of discipline, accountability, and excellence. He also founded the highly competitive boys’ club program CAN-Six, which quickly earned recognition for developing elite talent.
As his twin daughters emerged as top Canadian prospects, Paul shifted his focus to girls’ basketball — and his impact was immediate. With the Scarborough Blues Association, he led teams to multiple JUEL championships. His programs produced numerous Canada Basketball athletes, U SPORTS standouts, and NCAA scholarship recipients. Though he preferred to remain behind the scenes, his players’ accomplishments spoke volumes — including NCAA conference Player of the Year honours and All-Conference Freshman Team selections. He also contributed his time and leadership to the ‘A’ Game Basketball Association, further strengthening grassroots development in Ontario.
Beyond coaching, Paul was an accomplished and dedicated basketball official throughout Durham Region and Toronto. His true passion was officiating at the grassroots and night-ball levels. He took pride in teaching young athletes the rules and integrity of the game during the day, and in the evening, managing competitive adult leagues with fairness and respect. His calm presence, strong communication skills, and ability to connect across generations made him invaluable. He willingly officiated games others would not, serving the community with humility and professionalism.
We honour the passing of a devoted family man, mentor, coach, and official. The Ontario Basketball community will carry forward his legacy — one rooted in service, leadership, and an unwavering commitment to the game and the people within it.
Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with Paul’s family, friends, former players, and colleagues during this difficult time.
Rest in peace, Coach Paul.
