U15 TEAM ONTARIO BOYS WIN GOLD AT NATIONALS

Most Valuable Player - Tyrell Greene First Team All-Star - Malcolm Duvivier Second Team All-Star - Kemar Alleyne August 7th at 7:00 p.m. - Ontario 82 vs. Quebec 77 Box Score In the Canada Basketball 15U National Championship the Ontario boys were in though against their neighboring rival Quebec. This was a rematch from their last round robin game in which Quebec had the lead at the half but late in the game Ontario rebounded to a 19 point win. Early in the final match Ontario set the pace playing quick with great hands on offence and defence. This smaller and quicker group allowed Quebec to own the rebounding battle in the first half 27-21. Ontario guard Lincoln Samuels was Ontario’s primary offensive threat in the first half as he converted four for nine shooting with ten points. Tyrell Green contributed eight in the half and Kemar Alleyne grabbed five boards. At the break Ontario was holding onto a one-point lead, 36-35. Ontario struggled in the second half as shots were being missed and the larger Quebec squad was able to capitalize on the boards. Slowly the Ontario boys were losing their grasp on the control of the game. By the time the end of the third quarter came, Ontario had turned a one-point lead into a 12-point deficit. Quebec continued to roll out the high-powered offence in the forth earning them a lead of as much as 14 points. Like a flip of a switch Ontario responded. Ontario returned to their aggressive guard play as they forced turnovers on the mid court that turned into easy lay-ups. As Quebec’s offence began to tighten up, Ontario’s shots began to drop. Mid way through the quarter, Ontario had closed the gap to just five points. To close the game out Samuels and Malcolm Duvivier were doing everything to put their team in the position to win. Duvivier forced six turnovers in the half and Samuels tallied seven points down the stretch. Because of this effort Ontario closed out the last five minutes of the game on a 16-6 run winning 82-77. August 6th at 7:00 p.m. - Ontario 100 vs. Manitoba 62 Box Score Ontario in their national semi final match up would take on the host of what has been a magnificent tournament thus far in beautiful Winnipeg, Manitoba. The first five minutes was full of up-tempo basketball with turnovers and forced shots as both teams struggled with the pressure. Later in the first Ontario used their size and athleticism to force turnovers that turned into easy lay ups. By the end of the period Ontario had a nine-point lead. The second frame saw Ontario own the glass grabbing most missed shots. Ontario had the lead up to 16 before the Manitoba crowd started rallying the troops. The louder the gym got the smaller the lead became. By the time the half rolled around Manitoba had shrunk the lead to just eight with a score of 48-40. The half time speech from coach Jeff Giovanatti must have been inspiring as Ontario came out in the second half flying. The guard work from Shandon Mootoosamy, Malcolm Duvivier and Kemar Alleyne was tremendous as they each forced multiple turnovers in the Manitoba backcourt. These we quickly turned into lay ups as Ontario stretched the gap to 24 at the end of the third. By the fourth quarter Giovanatti was able to utilize his bench getting time for all his boys. Each of Ontario athletes was able to register a field goal and a rebound. This is a testament to Ontario’s depth. With these abilities Ontario was able to secure a 100-62 win over host Manitoba. Nother’s player of the game recognition went to Tyrell Green who banked 15 points, grabbed a massive 16 rebounds and blocked three shots. Ryan Cassidy also had an impressive performance registering a double-double in points and rebounds. Ontario will next see action in the National Championship game scheduled for August 7, 2010 at 6:00PM where they will meet up with the young and quick Team Quebec. August 4th at 8:15 p.m. - Ontario 101 vs. British Columbia 60 Box Score Ontario went into their final pool play match of the 2010 National Championships against one of their largest rivals, British Columbia. Right from the tip off the Ontario guards were pushing the tempo on offence and disrupting the BC backcourt on defence. This style of play allowed Ontario to jump to a 15-point lead to finish the first period. The second period was no different as coach Jeff Giovanatti liberally played his bench. All but one Ontario player registered a point in the half and that only player who helped the squad with two assists, one rebound and one steal. At the half Ontario led BC 60-37. The second half proved to be much of the same type of action as Ontario pressed hard and widened the gap to as much as 43 points. Coach Giovanatti for Ontario continued to give his bench some valued on court time as they accounted for 53 of Ontario’s 101 points. The final result had Ontario win 101-60. Player of the game recognition went to Kemar Alleyne who shot perfect from the field and went four for five from the charity stripe. Other Ontario players in double digit scoring included Malcolm Duvivier (12), Tyrell Green (15), Conner Gilmore (14), Chris McComber (12) and Raynold Kasongo (11). August 3rd at 1:30 p.m. - Ontario 89 vs. Quebec 70 Box Score The 15U Team Ontario boys’ squad matched up against powerhouse Quebec in second round action of the 2010 National Championships. Both teams were looking to keep their undefeated record in tact. Right from the tip off Ontario unleashed their offensive attack opening up with a 12-0 run. Their offence was complemented with their full court ball pressure strategy, which forced their counterparts from Alberta into 12 first half turnovers. In the second half, the Ontario boys continued to roll by knocking down threes and capitalizing on fast break lay-up opportunities. By the time the game clock hit zeros, Ontario tallied a mark in the win column with a score of 100-56. Player of the game acknowledgements went to Tyrell Green from St. David Blues Basketball Association in Toronto. Green banked 20 points and grabbed 5 rebounds in 15 minutes of court time. The first half theme was solidly based on defence as both teams guarded hard, forcing turnovers and difficult shots. Ontario’s defence forced Quebec into 16 turnovers but Ontario struggled on the other end with 18 turnovers of their own and a field goal percentage of a mere 36 percent. At the half, the Ontario 15U squad led 55-21. In the first half Ontario was lead by Scarborough Blues Guard Kemar Allayne who banked seven points and grabbed seven boards. At the half Ontario trailed Quebec 34-32. The second half opened with a Quebec going on a 16-8 run gapping Ontario by ten points. Late in the third period, out of a timeout, Ontario began to pressure, setting up an offensive structure and playing focused Ontario basketball. This allowed the Ontario guards to heat up. Malcolm Duvivier slashed to the basket finishing at the rim and was dropping shots from all over the court. Duvivier accounted for 20 of Ontario’s 57 second half points. Team Ontario’s depth at the guard spot proved to be too much for Quebec as they quickly took the lead back and slowly spread that lead to a 19 point advantage. The game final ended with Ontario ahead of Quebec 89-70. The 15U Team Ontario squad will next see action against Team British Columbia who has a one and one record after beating Team Alberta in a one point buzzer beater finish. Tip off for Ontario’s next match will be at 9:15PM EST on August 4, 2010. August 2nd at 6:00 p.m. - Ontario vs. Alberta Box Score The 2010 15U Boys National Championships opened for Ontario with a tone setting victory. Placed in a pool with Alberta, British Columbia and Quebec, Ontario needed to deliver a first round message. Ontario will have a day off before getting back into action. August 6, 2010 at 7:00PM Ontario will be matched up in the national semifinal against one of Alberta, Manitoba or Newfoundland.
